TL;DR

  • Kokoon is a creative production house in Bradford, producing experiential work for retail, hospitality and live events, with large wide-format printing on site
  • For more than a decade, almost all of its work came through relationships, but after adding capacity over the last two years, it needed a way to find the right new clients
  • Outsourced lead generation and broad Google searches had both fallen short, returning leads that didn't fit the work Kokoon does
  • With Handshaik, Kokoon now has a clear view of its market, from suitable prospects it didn't know existed to the competitors around it
  • For the first time, it has a defined process for building its pipeline, and is appointing a dedicated person to lead it

A business built on relationships

Kokoon is a creative production house based in Bradford. It designs and produces visual, experiential work for retail, hospitality and live events, and runs large wide-format printing on site. Most of its clients are agencies of 50 staff or more, working on behalf of high-street retailers, exhibition companies and big corporate brands. Kokoon would like to work with more agencies in Yorkshire, but most of its clients today are based in London.

For 10 to 15 years, almost all of that work came through relationships.

"We've never been great at marketing the business,"

says James Lister, Managing Director of Kokoon.

"A lot of our work has come organically through relationships, and that's just how our business has developed and grown."

Over the last 18 to 24 months, though, Kokoon has grown quickly, adding capacity across the business, with live events becoming one of its biggest growth areas. The work is seasonal too: from March, spring and summer exhibitions and events fill the calendar, and the rest of the year is about keeping the quieter parts of the business busy. Relationships alone weren't going to fill that capacity.

Leads that didn't fit the work

Kokoon had tried outsourcing sales and lead generation before, but found that agencies often lacked either the understanding of the business or the tools to identify the right prospects. The result was a steady flow of leads that rarely matched what Kokoon actually offered.

"We're very specific in what we do,"

says James,

"We do printing, but not all kinds of printing. We just want one specific type - ideally big, wide-format stuff. We don't want to print a thousand business cards."

Its own prospecting wasn't much better. Google searches were too broad to be useful, purchased lead lists weren't specific to Kokoon's market, and general AI search tools returned results James describes as "so sporadic, it's unreal." Without a way to narrow the market down to the right sectors and the right people, every attempt at outreach was hit and miss.

A clearer view of the market

With Handshaik, Kokoon can search for new clients in specific sectors and get straight to the right contacts inside each business.

"It's getting to the specifics in terms of the contacts within businesses that we couldn't before,"

says James

"You could, but it took a lot more effort to get there. It gets to the end result much easier, much quicker than you could previously."

It has also given Kokoon a far better picture of the market it works in. The team has found suitable prospects it didn't know were out there, along with a much clearer sense of who else is competing for the same work, and where those competitors are based.

"It's surprising how many people we do want to target, and that are suitable clients potentially for us, that you don't even appreciate exist,"

James added,

"And it's amazing to see how many competitors we've got as well."

A process to build on

For Kokoon, the biggest change has been having a process at all.

"We're coming up with a more refined process, and that's something that we've never previously had at all. It's providing some framework for a process to start building the pipeline, to start looking at other businesses, to start searching for new clients in specific sectors."

James Lister, Kokoon Ltd

Instead of working through huge lists, the team can now spend its time on the companies that fit, which James describes as "pinpointing the people we really want to speak to."

The next step is to make that process permanent. Kokoon is appointing a dedicated person to lead its pipeline building, using Handshaik to find new clients and reporting back to the board on what they find. A business that grew for more than a decade on who it knew now has a repeatable way to find who it should know next.
